When I opined that Oracle can not be trusted to keep MySQL going there were some in the MySQL and Oracle community who accused me of spreading FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt). I agree that there is indeed a lot of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt around MySQL these days. However, I don’t think that this humble blog is the reason. Bottom line is that since the acquisition was first announced Oracle has said nothing about its plans for MySQL. Oracle certainly said plenty about its plans for SUN hardware, its plans for Java, even its plans for Solaris. [...]

It is no secret that we in the DB2 Express-C team are big fans of Ruby on Rails and we and our DB2 developers have worked hard to make DB2 a great database for Ruby on Rails programmers. JRuby is of particular importance to us as it helps advance the use of Ruby on Rails in the enterprise. With the impending acquisition of SUN by Oracle, the JRuby team felt uncertain about the future of JRuby within Oracle. So, they decided to join the people who really care about Ruby i.e. Engine Yard. Given Engine Yard’s commitment to Ruby on Rails this is a great move for the Ruby community. We wish JRuby and Engine Yard teams the best. [...]

Last week I blogged about uncertain future of MySQL in Oracle’s hands. At that time a number of people pinged me to say that they thought that I was spreading FUD. In their view MySQL under Oracle’s stewardship would live long and propser.
Well, only a week has passed and Oracle is yet to ink the deal to swallow SUN. However, the key players in the MySQL community have already fired a shot across Oracle’s bow letting it know that it will not be directing the future of MySQL. Basically, while Oracle may be purchasing MySQL as part of the SUN acquisition, it [...]

I spent the last week in Portland at the O’Reilly Open Source Convention also known as OSCON. We were part of the IBM exhibit talking to people about DB2 Express-C. OSCON is an interesting conference. Basically it is a big lovefest for the open source guys. Imagine about 2500 geeks all assembled in a single place for a week to talk about free software. The best part for me is that OSCON is not fixated on Linux. There were plenty of tutorials and talks on PHP, Python, Django, Ruby on Rails and of course databases. As one would [...]

We will have a pedestal in the exhibit hall at the O’Reilly Opens Source Conference 2008 that is on this week at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. While sessions and tutorials pass does cost but money admittance to the Expo Hall is free. If you are at the conference on Wednesday or Thursday stop by the IBM booth 401 and say hello to Leon Katsnelson (me) and Rav Ahuja.
OSCON is all about open source so “free” is presumed. So, with DB2 Express-C we are focusing on what makes it really different from other DBMS both open [...]
