DB2, Big Data and Cloud Computing Webinar

Cool stuff

Update: Replay of the webinar is at http://channelbigdata.com/video/clouds-for-small-and-big-data

The coolest part of my job is the opportunity to work with hottest technologies. I’ve been lucky over the years to be able to pick an emerging technology that I thought was going to make an impact on IT and immerse myself in it. Right now I find myself torn between two areas that I am convinced are the game changers. When I can’t decide what to pick I do both.

Cloud computing is redefining the way IT resources are provisioned. It is a fundamental change in the way [...]

Big Data at the IOD 2011 Conference in Las Vegas

Every year around the end of October I see geese heading south for the winter. And as if there was a similar instinct, those of us who are in to data and information processing head down to Las Vegas for the annual Information On Demand Conference. Next version of DB2 goes for the cloud in Japan

Last week I blogged about the early experience program for the next version of DB2 that lets people experience the next version of IBM DB2 database without having to find a server, install and patch operating system or even install DB2. See you at IDUG EMEA in Vienna

I am about to get on an airplane to go to Vienna Austria where I will participate in the anual International DB2 User Group (IDUG) EMEA Conference. Vienna is a great city (too bad the forecast calls for rain) and the IDUG conference is in a perfect spot in Vienna. There will be copious consumption of beer Wiener Schnitzel and apple strudel chased by excellent coffee. Coffee was actually introduced to Europe via Vienna but I digress. As great as Vienna is, I am not going to travel half way around the world and suffer from jetlag just to get [...]

Lower Amazon S3 cloud storage price is good news for DB2 users

Amazon announced that they are reducing charges for their S3 cloud storage offering. The announcement boasts about a 19% percent reduction. Savings are higher as the amount of storage you use increases. Amazon S3 is not suitable as DB2 storage but it is a great place to keep backups and log archives. Lower price coupled with DB2 backup compression makes Amazon S3 an even more compelling solution for backing up DB2 databases. [...]
