Today is a really great day for those who like IBM DB2 and especially those who like to get it free of charge. Earlier today we released DB2 Express-C, the free version of the IBM DB2 DBMS, to the world. We made it available for immediate download and we also made it available on the cloud in the RightScale MultiCloud Marketplace. Don’t get scared by the word “Marketplace”. DB2 Express-C is still free of charge and just as before it can be used to run production applications and even be embedded in to your own solutions.

Why get DB2 Express-C v10?

There is probably no hotter are in IT right now than Cloud Computing. The allure of lower costs and higher agility is simply too hard to ignore. However, one can nto have a conversation about Cloud Computing without encountering concerns about security and loss of control by the IT management. It is these concerns that are driving a great deal of interest in private clouds. Unlike public clouds like Amazon Web Services and IBM SmartCloud Enterprise which are sharing resources between all of the customers, private clouds allow IT organizations to create shared resource pools comfortably located behind corporate firewalls [...]
Read ...

Line of business users are increasingly bringing expectations from their consumer experiences to the front door of IT. The thinking is that if it takes a few minutes to get a Gmail account and it is free, why does it take weeks to get an Exchange account on a corporate email system? In an organization of any size, it takes weeks if not [...]
Read ...

Last week I blogged about the early experience program for the next version of DB2 that lets people experience the next version of IBM DB2 database without having to find a server, install and patch operating system or even install DB2. This is possible through the magic of Cloud Computing. In this post I talked about how we greatly improved the overall experience of the program for participants in Europe and Asia. One of the great advantages of running things in the cloud is that you get to decide where you want to place your server. For example, you can decide that [...]
Read ...

Last week I blogged about the rise in importance of location-based data. The timing was not a coincidence. I am a bit of a gadget freak and last week was a pretty important event in the world of gadgets and technology in general. For the first time ever Apple, a company specializing in mobile devices, became the largest technology company in the world, edging out Microsoft, a traditional computing company. Because pretty much every mobile device today comes with ability to capture location data, I am convinced that we are entering a stage where location data will become ubiquitous.

Another reason [...]
Read ...

When it comes to computing, we are no longer chained to our office desks and a large Windows machine. The computing device of choice today is an iPhone, or an a new Android based device, not an old and clunky desktop PC. The new generation and the new population uses phones to compute. In India alone, 15 million mobile telephone subscribers were added every months in 2008.
