Last week I blogged about the early experience program for the next version of DB2 that lets people experience the next version of IBM DB2 database without having to find a server, install and patch operating system or even install DB2. This is possible through the magic of Cloud Computing. In this post I talked about how we greatly improved the overall experience of the program for participants in Europe and Asia. One of the great advantages of running things in the cloud is that you get to decide where you want to place your server. For example, you can decide that [...]

A couple of weeks ago we released Alpha 4 of the next version of DB2 without much fanfare, pump or ceremony. Why so quietly? Is there no interesting new functionality that IBM would want to know about? is the quality not there yet? Not at all. The upcoming version of DB2 is bristling with some really cool functions and despite the “Alpha” designation the code seems to be very stable. [...]

Put them off? Encourage them? Suggest they re-train as an Investment Banker ? etc DB2 list is a favorite hang out place for DB2 for z/OS DBAs and system programmers. While the question is specific to mainframe jobs, I think it applies to other DBAs and even to IT careers overall. The IT as a career choice has lost a lot of its shine. Universities across United States, Canada and western Europe report significant drop in enrolments in computer science programmes. Much of the blame, rightly or wrongly, is directed at outsourcing. Jeff Jonas will keynote this years conference. If you have never heard Jeff Jonas speak you are in for a treat. It does not matter what the subject, he will entertain and inspire you with deep insight, anekdotes and a different perspective on hot issues. Jeff is a founder of SRD, the company that helped Las Vegas casinos catch cheaters and US Federal agencies to combat terrorism .. all by analyzing data. SRD did such an outstanding job of data analysis that IBM acquired the company in 2005. [...]

You can see the top 20 most downloaded episods here. To bring in new talent to the Season 2 (Jay Leno was not available) DBI Software and IDUG banded together to and created a contest that rewards with lavish prizes those willing to present their DB2 experiences. [...]
