Just like in real estate, location plays a huge role in making data relevant. When it comes to computing, we are no longer chained to our office desks and a large Windows machine. The computing device of choice today is an iPhone, or an a new Android based device, not an old and clunky desktop PC. The new generation and the new population uses phones to compute. In India alone, 15 million mobile telephone subscribers were added every months in 2008. That is like getting the entire population of Canada – every man, woman and child – as [...]
Read ...

This week I had an opportunity to spend some time at the annual MySQL conference in Santa Clara California. This is the second time I attended this conference. Last time I was at the MySQL conference was in the Spring of 2008 and the big news then was SUN acquisition of MySQL for a cool billion $s. This time it was Oracle swallowing SUN. So, when I was ready to go I was really curious to see how the conference would have changed and what the mood of the community would be.

Here are my highly subjective impressions. I will be presenting a session on Prototyping and Developing Database Applications in the Cloud on Thursday April 8 at 2:30 EST.

Development and Test has emerged as the leading use case for cloud computing because it delivers maximum benefit with minimal risk compared to other cloud computing use cases. When it comes to DB2, we have it fully cloud enabled.

This week we were at Lotusphere 2010 demonstrating DB2 Express-C for Lotus Foundations. One of the giveaways we had was a free book on DB2 Express-C. The book proved top be very popular and we ran out very quickly. I also got a lot of questions from people who did not have an opportunity to go to Lotusphere if there was a way to get a copy of the book. My answer is “absolutely, as long as you don’t mind getting it in an electronic form”. A real paper book that you can flip through is always nice [...]
Read ...

In the past year we have spent a lot of effort putting DB2 on the cloud and we achieved absolutely fantastic results. Db2 has proven to be a hit on both the Amazon cloud, on RightScale and on the IBM Developer Cloud. But all this focus on running applications on the rented IT infrastructure in the cloud does not mean we don’t care about people who want to have their own IT equipment. The free DB2 Express-C is a good fit for small and medium business and an even better fit for remote offices of very large enterprises.
